'Tahaan' is Directed by Sabtosh Sivan. The director has come out with an interesting subject and his
presentation was also perfect but then the narrative seemed to lack depth.
An interesting tale, the story begins on the backdrop of the beautiful Kashmir valley where a young boy
Tahaan (Purav) lives with his grandpa (Victor), mother Haba (Sarika), elder sister Zoya (Sana Sheikh) and
his pet donkey Birbal. Tahaan's father has been missing since three years but the family lives on the only
hope that he would return someday. Meanwhile, things take a difficult turn when Tahaan's grandfather
passes away and the family runs into debts. The tough money lender Kuka Saab (Rahul Khanna) arrives
on the scene and takes away all the belongings and Tahaan gets disturbed when his long standing
companion Birbal is taken away too. He takes it upon himself to get Birbal back home and discovers in
the process that it has been sold to one Subhan (Anupam Kher) across the mountains.
Tahaan is disturbed but then he manages to get hold of Subhan and tells him about Birbal, though the old
man finds the kid to be repulsive, later he starts liking him. Tahaan is on his way back to home when he
meets Idrees (Ankush) who influences Tahaan that he can get Birbal back provided he carries a grenade
and a package across the border along with him. Tahaan immediately agrees for it and accompanies
Subhan also for the journey with Birbal holding the package. And what happens hereafter is to be seen
on the screen.
Presentation:
The dialogues were alright, music was about average, editing was numb, script was alright but the
screenplay was bad. Cinematography gets full marks while the other departments were nominal in their
contributions. Anupam Kher has come up with a top notch performance and equally good was Sarika but
then experts like Rahul Bose and Victor Banerjee did not have much scope, even Rahul Khanna had the
same result. The real show stealer and life for the film was the young Purav who is another excellent find.
His performance was remarkable. The others did their bit but not very impressive.
