Sue (Alice Patten), a young, London-based filmmaker learns about the Indian freedom fighters, from the diaries of her late grandfather, who served in the British Police Force in India during the freedom struggle. Excited about these, she plans to make a film on the Indian revolutionaries mentioned in the diaries. She comes to India. Sue, aided by Sonia (Soha Ali Khan), meets a group of friends in whom she sees the characters of her documentary. The group consists of D.J. (Aamir Khan), Aslam (Kunal Kapoor), Karan (Siddharth) and Sukhi (Sharman Joshi). All of them are college goers.
DJ is from a Punjabi family consisting of a loving mother (Kiron Kher). Aslam comes from a Muslim family and refuses to endorse the opinion that Muslims ought not mingle with Hindus. Karan is the innocent one. He is rich but has a dry, loveless life. He smokes heavily and seeks happiness among his friends. Sukhi is full of fun. He has no girlfriend and thinks that he would die a kunwara. Also part of the group is Fl. Lft. Ajay Rathod (Madhavan), the love of Sonia (Soha). He is the only one in the group who has dedication to serve the country.
None of the friends is serious enough to be a part of Sue's documentary. But she can see the characters of her movie in them. She sees D.J. as Chandra Shekhar Azad, Karan as Bhagat Singh and Aslam as Ashfak. Finally the five friends agree to be a part of her movie. But then, Ajay dies in a MiG crash and is labelled as a rookie pilot by the Defence Minister who is unwilling to accept shortcomings in the MiG aircrafts. All the others lead the protest against the Defence Minister to get Ajay the honour he deserved. They are beaten in return. And how the other friends brought the truth to light forms the rest of the story.
Performance:
Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra deserves full praise for making a movie that is not been made in the Bollywood till date. The movie begins on a light note and there are plenty of humourous moments in the movie. All the cast selected by the director performed excellently. They are really appreciated. The music given by A.R.Rahman is one of the highlights of the movie. The title song is superb. All the technical aspects of the movie are good.
